StarPlus is an Indianpay television channel owned by Star India.[1] The network's programming consists of family dramas, comedies, youth-oriented reality shows, shows on crime and television films.[1] It is also distributed internationally by The Walt Disney Company India, subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company.[1]
The most successful offerings of the channel are Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, Kasautii Zindagii Kay (2001 TV series), Kumkum – Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, Saath Nibhaana Saathiya, Yeh Hai Mohabbatein and Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke
History[edit]
When it was first launched on 21 February 1992,[1] StarPlus was an English-language television channel showing international TV shows from the U.S., the UK and Australia, with Zee TV being the Hindi-language counterpart.[2] However, after Star ended its relationship with Zee TV, Star Plus was transformed into a Hindi-language channel, with Star World becoming the network's English-language counterpart channel.[3]
In 2000, the company's CEO Sameer Nair and programming chief Tarun Katial introduced a number of new shows, which helped to solidify the channel's position as the leader in the Hindi-language television broadcasting area.[4]
It launched in the United States in November 2004.[5]
The channel's high-definition feed was launched on 15 April 2011.[6] It carries the same schedule as the SD feed, but with different commercials. Star Plus HD was set to launch in both the United Kingdom and Ireland by the end of 2011,[7] but it was delayed until 5 July 2012.[8]
On October 6, 2017, Canada's ATN Channel lost rights to Star programming, with viewers directed to the new streaming service Hotstar, which was recently introduced in the Canadian market.[9]
Star ended transmission of traditional networks in the American market on January 4, 2019, deciding instead to market its Hotstar streaming service direct to consumers as a better overall value than the few linear channels in the suite, which were often marked up by pay television providers to justify their carriage costs, and months before the consummation of the Fox/Disney merger; Hotstar is marketed by The Walt Disney Company as one of the deal's prime assets.[10][11]

Programming[edit]
In 3 April 2017, it brought back its afternoon programming which was shut down some years ago with the launch of 4 new soap operas from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm (IST).[12] It was later extended up to 3:00 pm with Love Ka Hai Intezaar in May 2017 but was again made 2 hours from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm as the soap Tu Sooraj Main Saanjh Piyaji was shifted to prime time.[13] Due to low ratings than expected, it was cancelled by the channel in September 30 in the same year.[14] It was during that year, Star Plus which always remained in top three was positioned at seventh place in top 10 Indian GEC channels (urban+rural) and with fourth position in Hindi GEC channels, which is the first time it had a decline this much.[15]
